FAQs
Recommended ages differ between karts and tracks, but generally the top speed of a kart is a good way to judge the appropriate age for a user. If a kart has a low top speed of 3 km/h, then it could be safe for children as young as 4, but if the kart has a higher top speed of around 19 km/h, then it may be better suited for kids who are 9 or older. There’s no official legislation on this, so just make sure that children learn at their own pace and are monitored by an adult at all times.
The vast majority of electric go karts are not road legal. To qualify as road legal, they must adhere to the following requirements (check Keith Michael’s Can a Go-Kart Be Road Legal? article for more information):
– Must be no longer than 12m long, 2.5m wide and 3.66m high
– Must meet the appropriate breaking distances
– Include the correct instruments (lights, indicators etc.)
– Must have a seatbelt
– Have number plates, insurance and tax (if appropriate)
Electric go karts should not be used on public roads, bicycle lanes or pedestrian walkways. They can however be used on private land providing you are the owner of the land or have permission from the owner (check this gov.uk article on Powered Transporters legislation for further information).
No, you do not need a drivers license to drive a go kart. If you visit a go kart track or join a go karting club, there may be specialised rules including the requirement to apply for a karting license, but if you’re planning to buy your own kart for use on private property, you do not need a license.
