FAQs
No, smart thermostats aren’t compatible with every boiler. Most popular models support a range of gas combi, system and conventional boilers, but compatibility depends on the heating controls and wiring used.
Some thermostats also support OpenTherm, allowing compatible boilers to adjust their heating output more precisely. Before buying, check the manufacturer’s compatibility guide and make sure you’ve selected the correct kit for your heating and hot water system.
Smart thermostats can help reduce heating bills by preventing unnecessary heating and giving you greater control over temperatures and schedules.
Features such as geofencing, automatic scheduling and open window detection can help reduce energy consumption, particularly if you often forget to adjust your heating. However, actual savings depend on your property, heating habits and existing controls, so lower bills aren’t guaranteed.
Some smart thermostat systems are designed for DIY installation, particularly when replacing compatible existing controls. However, most UK boiler installations require connecting a receiver or programmer to the heating system.
If installation involves mains wiring or changes to boiler connections, using a suitably qualified heating engineer or electrician is generally recommended. Always check the manufacturer’s installation instructions and boiler compatibility before starting.
