FAQs
Yes, satellite communicators can send messages and share your location without mobile phone coverage by connecting directly to satellite networks. Devices such as the Garmin inReach range and ZOLEO use the Iridium satellite network for communication in remote locations.
However, a reasonably clear view of the sky is still important. Dense forests, mountains and buildings can interfere with satellite connectivity, and an active subscription is generally required.
Most two-way satellite communicators require a paid subscription to enable satellite messaging, location tracking and interactive SOS services. Garmin inReach and ZOLEO offer different service plans, with costs depending on messaging allowances, tracking features and subscription terms.
Before purchasing, check the latest UK subscription prices, activation fees and cancellation conditions. The ongoing service cost can make a significant difference to the overall price of ownership.
Yes, compatible satellite communicators feature dedicated SOS functionality that allows you to request emergency assistance beyond mobile coverage. Devices such as the Garmin inReach Mini 2, Mini 3 Plus and GPSMAP 67i can send an interactive SOS alert with your location to Garmin’s emergency response coordination centre.
Unlike a basic one-way distress beacon, interactive SOS allows you to exchange messages with responders when a satellite connection is available. An active satellite subscription is required, and emergency communication should never be treated as guaranteed.
