Laser levels are useful tools that project a beam of light to create a horizontal or vertical plane of reference. They’re useful for construction and home improvement projects to ensure that surfaces are level and straight. They’re a great solution when compared with more traditional methods like tape or string, as laser levels can be adjusted or removed in an instant.

When choosing a laser level, it is important to consider the accuracy, range, and additional features. We’ve put together a list of some of the best laser levels on the market so that you don’t have to.

So, what are our favourites?

Product Summaries

BLACK+DECKER BDL120 Manual Laser Level

If you want a budget option the BLACK+DECKER BDL120 Manual Laser Level is a great choice – it’s currently selling for £24/$29.

If you’re just looking for a simple solution for creating a horizontal line, and you’re not planning to use a laser level regularly, then it may be worth going for this price efficient option. Unlike some of the other levels on this list, the BDL120 is not self levelling, so you will need to ensure that you setup the device correctly in order to produce level lines.

Despite the need to manually level the BDL120, it is still capable of rotating 360 degrees, so it’s not as difficult to use as you might think. It also uses AA batteries, so there’s no need to charge it intermittently in between uses.

CIGMAN Self Levelling Green Laser Level

Next we have the CIGMAN Self Levelling Green Laser Level, which is currently selling for £80/$96 on Amazon.

The CIGMAN is definitely a step-up from the BDL120, as it has options for both self levelling and manual levelling. You can unlock the pendulum, making the laser self-level within 4°(otherwise the laser will keep flashing). Alternatively you can lock the pendulum to switch to the manual mode, meeting your alignment needs from different angles. This definitely makes it’s much easier to setup. It also gives the user a greater feeling of confidence in the accuracy of the lines.

On top of this, it is also capable of producing both horizontal and vertical lines, meaning it’s a great option if you need to line something up on multiple axes. It utilises a green laser instead of the BDL120’s red, and it’s reportedly 4x brighter, making it great for daytime use in well lit conditions.

When looking for the best laser level, it’s important to consider the past reputation of the brand. RYOBI have created a reputable name for themselves in the power tool market, and the RB360GLL lives up to the name. It again features an impressive self levelling system, which uses an intuitive LED to indicate when the laser is out of level.

The BD360GLL’s compact design also makes transportation between jobs painless. It can also be mounted to any tripod that utilises a ¼” thread, including the RYOBI telescopic pole [RBCLTP1].

FAQs

In short, yes. If you regularly use traditional methods like string, tape or spirit levels to create lines of reference, a laser level can make this process far more convenient and improve accuracy in most cases.

Laser levels generate a laser line that provides the user with a straight plane of reference. This removes the user error associated with using traditional methods like tape or string, and the laser is not disrupted by existing 3D objects. You can also adjust a laser level far more quickly than you could adjust tape or string – with a laser level the adjustment could be as simple as rotating or elevating the device, whereas adjusting tape might require you to remove and reapply everything that’s been laid out so far.

One of the main disadvantages of laser levels compared to traditional levelling methods like string or tape is the required power. Most systems either use batteries or direct power cables, both of which have their own pros and cons.

Battery systems allow you to move your laser level freely without the limitations of a power cable, but you have to periodically recharge them between uses.

You can use wired laser levels without recharging them, but you’re limited by the positions of plug sockets as well as the length of your power cable.

Tape or string have no power requirements and may be more useful in some situations because of this, but it’s difficult to beat the speed, accuracy, and easy adjustments of the more modern laser levels.

There’s loads of excellent options on the market, but the DEWALT DW088K Self-Levelling Line Laser is one of our favourites. This premium offering from household name DEWALT is more than suitable for both DIY and commercial jobs. It has loads of useful features including self-levelling, automatic out-of-level detection and quick-release clamps for easy adjustment of the included tripod. It’s difficult to find a better laser level at this price point.

If you want something that’s a bit more affordable, the BLACK+DECKER BDL120 Manual Laser Level is great value for money.

The general consensus is that green laser levels are the better choice.

Green lasers are usually brighter, travel further, and are equally as accurate as their red laser equivalents. They’re also usually much more visible in daylight, so it’s worth swapping out a red laser level for a green one if you regularly use them in the day time.
